Recycling and Waste Disposal

The Kingfield New Portland Transfer Station located on Route 16 between New Portland and Kingfield is a jointly owned facility serving New Portland, Kingfield, and some surrounding towns. Hours are 7:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Residents using the Transfer Station with their own vehicles must have a  Transfer Station sticker attached to the lower left side of their windshields. These stickers may be obtained at the Transfer Station. While at the Town Office it is important to pick up detailed instructions for separating recyclables and for packaging trash so that it is acceptable at the Transfer Station. Items such as tires and some appliances are subject to a disposal fee. An abbreviated list of regulations follows:

All non-recyclable garbage and trash must arrive in clear colorless plastic bags.

Non-recyclable materials are acceptable provided the transfer station attendant has directed where they should be deposited.

  • Demolition debris
  • Ashes
  • Brush, scrap lumber and other untreated wood

All solid waste shall have the following recyclable materials separated.

  • Corrugated cardboard and brown paper bags
  • all low-grade cardboard
  • Newspapers, telephone books, magazines and catalogs
  • High-grade paper
  • Mixed household paper
  • all numbered plastics
  • Tin cans
  • Aluminum
  • Used oil
  • Fluorescent light bulbs and mercury thermostats
  • Glass
  • Composting

INDEPENDENT TRASH HAULERS

There are a number of independent haulers who pick up trash in New Portland for a fee. Some may require recyclables to be separated.
